Gloversville

Town in Fulton County, east-central New York; population (1990) 16,700. It is situated on Cayadutta Creek, between the Mohawk River and the Adirondack Mountains, 19 km/12 mi northwest of Amsterdam. It was established as Kingsboro in 1760, a group of glovemakers from Perthshire, Scotland, arriving to make thick gloves and mittens for regional farmers. Tanning and glovemaking remain the leading industries of Gloversville (renamed in 1832). The town also manufactures clothing, shoes, and other leather goods. Regional farms produce apples and potatoes. Gloversville is the south gateway to the lakes of the Adirondacks.
