Gobabis

Town in Namibia, 229 km/142 mi east of Windhoek, on the bank of the Black Nossop River; population (1990 est) 6,500. It is the centre of a cattle ranching and dairy farming region.

In March 1998, the Trans-Kalahari Highway, a two-lane all-weather road from Walpis Bay on the coast of Namibia, through Windhoek, Gobabis, and Botswana, to the industrial area of Gauteng province in South Africa, was officially opened. It forms the substantial portion of a coast-to-coast route, linking with roads going on to the port of Maputo in Mozambique. It was built to stimulate integrated economic development in southern African countries.
