goblet cell

In biology, cup-shaped cell present in the epithelium of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Goblet cells secrete mucin, the main constituent of mucous, which lubricates the mucous membranes of these tracts.

The specimen also contained numerous goblet cells and a few islands of squamous epithelium.
Adler, a cell biologist at the College of Veterinary Medicine of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, and his colleagues suggested that MARCKS binds to tough sacs inside goblet cells and stimulates release of the mucus stored there.
In the exposed subjects, goblet cells increased up to 54% of all epithelial cells (Figure 3).
