Godard, Benjamin (Louis Paul) (1849–1895)

French composer. In 1878 he tied with Théodore Dubois in gaining the prize in a competition organized by the municipality of Paris with the dramatic symphony Le Tasse for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra. In 1885 he established a series of ‘modern concerts’ without success.

He studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatory, and became a viola player in chamber music.

operas Pedro de Zalamea (1884), Jocelyn (1888), Le Dante (1890), La Vivandière, Les Guelfes; incidental music to Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing and Fabre's Jeanne d'Arc.

Orchestral

Scènes poétiques (1879), dramatic poem Diane, Symphonie-Ballet, Symphonie gothique, Symphonie orientale, and Symphonie légendaire for orchestra; two violin concertos, two piano concertos.

Chamber

three string quartets (1883–93), two piano trios; five violin and piano sonatas.

Other

piano pieces; over 100 songs.
