Godavari

River in central India, rising in Western Ghats in Maharashtra state, and flowing through Andhra Pradesh state into the Bay of Bengal; length 1,450 km/900 mi. It is sacred to Hindus.

Its upper course is dry for six months of the year but its lower reaches have been dammed at Rajahmundry to provide irrigation and power. The delta is linked to the Krishna river by a navigable canal system; this has transformed the district into one of the best rice-growing areas in India. The delta is also the site of a bird sanctuary.
