Goderich

Town and administrative headquarters of Huron County, southwest Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 7,500. It is situated on a bluff overlooking Lake Huron where it is joined by the Maitland River, 182 km/113 mi northeast of Detroit, Michigan. It has a natural harbour and was founded in 1828 as a transhipment point for the Canada Company's Huron Tract development, but failed to become a thriving trade centre. The discovery of rock salt in the 1860s gave a boost to the economy, and its manufacture continues. Other industries include lumbering, grain storage, and tourism.
