Godthåb

Capital and largest town of Greenland, on the Godthåbsfjord; population (2003 est) 14,100. Godthåb is the seat of the national council and of the supreme court. It is a storage centre for oil and gas, and the chief industry is fish processing. The surrounding region has fine pastures and supports reindeer herds. The town was founded in 1728 by Hans Egede, a Norwegian missionary.
