Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Godwin-Austen, Henry Haversham (1834–1923)

English explorer. He made many ascents in the Himalayas and executed an important physical survey of the Baltoro region of the Karakoram. He made the first maps and descriptions of the great Baltoro Glacier and its surrounding ranges, which include K2 (8,611 m/28,261 ft), the second highest mountain in the world. The peak was named Mount Godwin-Austen after him in 1888, but the name has lapsed in favour of the original identification sign he used in his surveying log.

He joined the army in 1851 and the Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1857.
