Goeben

German battle cruiser in World War I. Initially operating jointly with the Breslau in the Aegean, from September 1914 the Goeben led the Turkish fleet in the Sea of Marmora and the Black Sea until badly damaged early 1918.

In a joint attack with the Breslau January 1918, the Goeben passed through the Dardanelles to attack the British but both German ships were herded into a minefield where the Breslau was sunk and the Goeben severely damaged and run ashore. Although the crew managed to make repairs so they could escape, they accidentally ran into a Turkish minefield shortly after and the ship was out of action for the rest of the war.
