Goehr, Walter (1903-1960)

German-born British conductor and composer. He gave the first performances of Benjamin Britten's Serenade and Michael Tippett's A Child of our Time. He also made editions of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 and Poppea.

He studied with Arnold Schoenberg in Berlin, conducting the Radio Orchestra there 1925-31. In 1933 he moved to London and was music director of the Columbia Graphophone Company until 1939. He conducted Morley College concerts from 1943.

He was the father of Alexander Goehr.
