Goffman, Erving (1922-1982)

Canadian social scientist. He studied the ways people try to create, present, and defend a self-image within the social structures surrounding, controlling, and defining human interaction. He analysed the ways people behave in public places, for example. His works include The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life 1956, Gender Advertisements 1979, and Forms of Talk 1981.
