Goiânia

Capital of the state of Goiás, Brazil, 200 km/124 mi southwest of Brasília; population (1996) 957,564. Planned as a new settlement in 1933, Goiânia has since grown into a substantial modern city. It lies in the centre of a cattle-ranching and coffee-growing area, and is on the Pan-American Highway from Brasília to Belém, at the mouth of the Amazon. The local economy is based on rice production and cattle-ranching.

Goiânia succeeded Goiás Velho as state capital in 1937. There is now a park in the west of the city, the Parque Mutirama, which includes a zoo and an educational area.
