West

Bright comet discovered by Danish astronomer Richard West at the European Southern Observatory in 1975. It became a prominent sight in the spring of 1976.

West passed within 30 million km/19 million mi of the Sun on 25 February 1976, and within 120 million km/75 million mi of Earth on 29 February. At its brightest in early March it reached zero magnitude and had a broad tail 30° long. A few days later it broke up into four pieces.
