Golconda

Golconda

Ancient city in Andhra Pradesh, south central India. It was formerly a diamond-producing centre, and was so prosperous that its name was used to describe any source of great wealth.

From 1364–1512 it was the capital of the Bahmani kingdom. Internal divisions resulted in the kingdom of Golconda, which in 1687 was conquered by Aurangzeb and annexed to the Muslim Mogul empire. Although itself a Muslim state, Golconda resented this and joined a Hindu alliance against Aurangzeb under the leadership of Shivaji (1627–1680). Under Mogul rule Golconda declined.
