Israeli Labour politician; foreign minister 1956-66 and prime minister 1969-74. Criticism of the Israelis' lack of preparation for the 1973 Arab-Israeli War led to election losses for Labour and, unable to form a government, she resigned.

Born in Russia, she emigrated to the USA in 1906, and in 1921 went to Palestine.
