Goldberg, Szymon (1909-1993)

Polish-born US violinist and conductor. He studied with Carl Flesch in Berlin and made his debut at Warsaw in 1921. He led the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra 1925-29, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (under Fürtwangler) 1929-34. He played in a string trio with Hindemith and Feuermann 1930-34, recording the Beethoven Serenade op. 8. His US debut was in 1938, and he moved there after the war. He performed in chamber music concerts at Aspen 1951-65, and followed a solo career from 1955. He conducted the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra 1955-78, and the Manchester Camerata 1977-79, and taught at Juilliard 1978-80, and the Manhattan School of Music from 1981. He is noted for his Mozart concerto performances, and for sonatas with Lili Kraus (1935-40).
