Golden Ass, The

Picaresque adventure by the Roman writer Lucius Apuleius, written in Latin about AD 160, sometimes described as the world's first novel. Lucius, transformed into an ass, describes his exploits with a band of robbers, weaving into the narrative several ancient legends, including that of Cupid and Psyche.

50 Hardcover Martin classical lectures PA6217 Second-century Roman writer Apuleius is best known for his Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass, the only Roman novel that has survived to the present, but in his time he was known as, and claimed to be, a serious Platonic philosopher and rhetorician.
According to the myth narrated by the Roman writer Apuleius in the Golden Ass, the beautiful Psyche, who was loved by Cupid, the god of love, was given immortality bu Zeus.
He argues that primary sites like monumental narrative paintings were more usually illustrations of Apuleius's Golden Ass, the source for the first major mythological cycle at the Villa Farnesina in Rome, or of ekphrastic descriptions by Philostratus and Lucian of Greek paintings.
