Golden Cockerel, The

Opera by Rimsky-Korsakov (libretto by V I Bielsky, based on Aleksandr Pushkin's satirical fairy tale), first produced in Moscow, Russia, on 7 October 1909, after Rimsky-Korsakov's death. It was his last opera. In the story, King Dodon's astrologer presents a golden cockerel, which can warn of trouble. The king falls in love with Queen Shemakha, whom the astrologer names as his price for the cockerel. The king refuses and the cockerel kills him.
