Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, USA. Upon completion in 1937 it was the world's longest suspension bridge; in 1964 the title was gained by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge over the mouth of New York Harbour.

The Golden Gate Bridge connecting northern California to the San Francisco peninsula. One of the most famous landmarks of the USA, until 1964 the bridge had the longest main span in the world.

Strait in western California, USA, linking San Francisco Bay with the Pacific; it is 8 km/5 mi long and 1.6–3 km/1–2 mi wide. It is spanned by a suspension bridge of the same name, designed by Joseph B Strauss (completed in 1937), connecting San Francisco on the south side with Marin County on the north; the longest span is 1,280 m/4,200 ft (it is one of the world's longest suspension bridges).

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area was established in 1972 by the National Park Service and includes Alcatraz (a federal prison from 1912 to 1963) and Angel Islands, as well as mainland areas to the north and south of the strait. The Presidio, a former army base, is the park to the south.
