Golden Horn

Narrow inlet of the Bosporus, northwest Turkey. Forming a natural harbour on the European side of the strait, it serves Istanbul to the south, and Karaköy and Beyoǧlu, the old city's former trading centres and diplomatic quarters, to the north. The waterway is spanned by the the Atatürk Bridge, and the new Galata Bridge, opened in 1992.

The original Galata pontoon bridge was restored after fire damage, and is now limited to pedestrian access.

History

In 1453 the Ottoman sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, having been prevented from entering the Golden Horn by a great chain, carried his boats overland to create a pontoon bridge from the inlet's northern shore and besiege the landwalls.

During the Ottoman period Genoese, Venetian, and Jewish trading colonies were established on its north banks.
