Goldfield

Hamlet and administrative headquarters of Esmeralda County, southwest Nevada. It is located 40 km/25 mi south of Tonopah. A 1902 strike brought on a gold rush and enormous prosperity. At its peak this was Nevada's largest city, with a population over 40,000. A bitter strike brought Federal troops here in 1907–08. The Nellis Air Force Range is 13 km/8 mi to the east.
