Goldman, Hetty (1881-1972)

US archaeologist. She was one of the first female directors of an archaeological excavation (at Halae, Greece, 1911-14) and went on to direct numerous excavations for the Fogg Museum and Bryn Mawr College in Greece, Asia Minor, and Yugoslavia at sites including Eutresis, Greece (1924-27) and Colophon (1922, 1925) and Tarsus (1934-39, 1947, 1948), Turkey. She had a reputation as an unusually systematic and accurate fieldworker. She was the first female professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1936-47).

Goldman was born in New York City. She was educated at Bryn Mawr College (BA) and Radcliffe University (MA and PhD). She turned to fieldwork while in Athens on a fellowship, specializing in prehistoric archaeology of the Greeks and other eastern Mediterranean peoples.
