Goldring, Winifred (1888–1971)

US palaeontologist. Her research focused on Devonian fossils and during the late 1920s and the 1930s, as well as geologically mapping the Coxsackie and Berne quadrangles of New York, she developed and maintained the State Museum's public programme in palaeontology.

Goldring was born near Albany, New York State, and educated at Wellesley College. She worked 1914–54 at the New York State Museum. Goldring began her work in palaeobotany 1916. In 1939 she was made state palaeontologist. Her works include The Devonian Crinoids of the State of New York 1923 and Handbook of Palaeontology for Beginners and Amateurs 1929–31. She did much to popularize geology.
