Golgi apparatus

Typical plant and animal cell. Plant and animal cells share many structures, such as ribosomes, mitochondria, and chromosomes, but they also have notable differences: plant cells have chloroplasts, a large vacuole, and a cellulose cell wall. Animal cells do not have a rigid cell wall but have an outside cell membrane only.

Stack of flattened membranous sacs found in the cells of eukaryotes. Many molecules travel through the Golgi apparatus on their way to other organelles or to the endoplasmic reticulum. Some are modified or assembled inside the sacs. The Golgi apparatus is named after the Italian biologist Camillo Golgi.

Effect of monensin on plant Golgi: re-examination of the monensin induced changes in cisternal architecture and functional activities of the Golgi apparatus of sycamore suspension--cultured cells.
The researchers report that the particles entered the cells and congregated in organelles such as the cell-powering mitochondria and the protein-processing Golgi apparatus.
In our research, separate cell biology and genetic studies in yeast both converged to demonstrate that excess levels of alpha-synuclein inhibit protein transport between two organelles within the cell, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus, resulting in cell death.
