Goliath beetle

Goliath beetle

Large beetle found only in tropical countries. The biggest Goliath beetle Goliathus giganteus, found in equatorial Africa, may be more than 150 mm/6 in long and is one of the largest insects.

They lay their eggs in the rotting wood of trees, and most adults feed on the tender floral parts or suck the sap exuded from trees. Its ‘brushed velvet’ wingcases are maroon and the pronotum (shield) is black with roughly longitudinal white stripes.

Classification

Goliath beetles belong to the subfamily Cetoniinae of the family Scarabaeidae in order Coleoptera, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.
