Goltz, Wilhelm Leopold Colmar, Freiherr von der (1843–1916)

German soldier. Goltz served on Prince Frederick's staff during the Franco-Prussian war 1870–71 and then with the General Staff in Berlin. He was attached to the Turkish Army 1883 and reorganized it along German lines. In World War I he accompanied the German Army into Belgium to become governor-general, first of Brussels and then of Belgium. He returned to Turkey 1915 and commanded a Turkish army during the Gallipoli campaign. He directed Turkish operations in the Middle East until his death from fever 19 April 1916.
