Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.10 sec.

Goltzius, Hendrik (1558-1617)

Dutch engraver and painter. The style of his landscape drawings and portrait engravings is very naturalistic, but his paintings are more traditionally Mannerist. His engravings after Dürer influenced Rubens; his landscape drawings mark him as a forerunner of the great Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century.

Goltzius was born at Mulebrecht. After working for some years in Holland and founding an academy at Haarlem in 1583, he made a tour through Germany and Italy 1590-91. Thereafter he remained for the rest of his life in Haarlem.
