Gombert, Nicolas (c. 1495-c. 1556)

Flemish composer. His music was admired for its sombre colours and close-knit textures.

Gombert was a pupil of Josquin Des Prez. He was in service at the emperor Charles V's chapel in Flanders from 1562 and became maître des enfants (master of the choirboys) in 1529; later he became a canon at Tournai and in 1537 went to Spain with 20 singers and held a post in the imperial chapel in Madrid. He was exiled in 1540 for gross indecency with his choirboys.

Works

10 Masses, 160 motets, psalms; about 80 chansons.
