Gomis, José Melchor (1791-1836)

Spanish composer. He was bandmaster in Barcelona, moved to Madrid about 1817, and in 1823 went to Paris, France, for political reasons. In 1826-29 he taught singing in London, England, where he published many Spanish songs, and then returned to Paris, where he produced comic operas.

Spanish monodrama Sensibilidad y prudencia, ó La aldeana; French comic operas Le Diable à Séville (1831), Le Revenant (after Scott, 1835), Le Portefaix, and Rock le barbu (1836).
