Gonçalves, Nuno (lived c. 1450-1471)

Portuguese artist. He was court painter to Afonso V. What little of his work survives includes the St Vincent polyptych (c. 1465-67, National Museum of Art, Lisbon). Covering six panels, it depicts Portuguese society in the form of a crowded gallery, with figures ranging from Alfonso and Henry the Navigator to clerics and fishermen. His work owes much to contemporary Flemish painting in its striking realism and bold use of colour.
