Goncharov, Ivan Alexandrovitch

    0.02 sec.

Goncharov, Ivan Alexandrovitch (1812–1891)

Russian novelist. His first novel, A Common Story (1847), was followed in 1858 by his humorous masterpiece Oblomov, which satirized the indolent Russian landed gentry.

From 1852–1855 he was secretary on the ship Pallada, which was sent to Japan by the tsar to open it to trade. His wry description of the world cruise was published as The Frigate ‘Pallada’ (1858).
