Gondoliers, The, or The King of Barataria

A costume design for the Duke of Plaza Toro, in the Richard D'Oyly Carte company's production of The Gondoliers, by W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, at the Savoy Theatre, London, England. The design is by Charles Ricketts (1866–1931). The first production of The Gondoliers at the Savoy Theatre took place in 1889.

Operetta by Arthur Sullivan (libretto by W S Gilbert), produced at the Savoy Theatre, London, England, on 7 December 1889. In the story, the baby prince of Baratavia is brought up by gondoliers. Not knowing the heir's true identity, the Inquisitor later appoints Marco and Giuseppe as rulers, but it is eventually revealed that the servant Luiz is the true king.
