Gonzales

Town in Ascension Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (1990) 7,000. It is located 32 km/20 mi southeast of Baton Rouge. Oil wells and sugar and truck farming sustain its economy.

Gonzales

Town and administrative headquarters of Gonzales County, southeast Texas; population (1990) 6,500. It is situated on the Guadalupe River, 98 km/61 mi east of San Antonio. Settled in 1825, it was the scene, on 2 October 1835, of the first fighting in the Texas Revolution, when residents and supporters drove off a small Mexican force. It later contributed ‘32 immortals’ to the defence of the Alamo. It is today an agricultural trade centre with some light manufactures.
