Gooch, George Peabody (1873-1968)

British historian who was an authority in the diplomatic history and foreign policy of the modern period, and his extensive researches made his History of Modern Europe 1878-1919, 1923, one of the best books on the period.

Gooch was educated at King's College, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he subsequently became an honorary fellow. After taking his degree he continued his studies in Berlin and Paris. From 1906 to 1910 he was Liberal MP for Bath. He undertook the joint editorship with Sir Adolphus Ward of the Cambridge History of British Foreign Policy 1783- 1919, 1922-23.

He was president of the Historical Association, 1922-25, and of the National Peace Council, 1933-36.
