Good Soldier Svejk, The

Humorous Czech novel by Jaroslav Hašek, serially published 1921-23 but unfinished when the author died. An earthy picaresque narrative with vivid dialogue, drawing on the author's experiences with the Austrian army in 1915, it depicts a shrewd, sardonic, wayward survivor with an endearing disrespect for political and military authority.
