Goodwin, Thomas (1600–1680)

English Puritan divine who was well thought of by Cromwell. Five volumes of his works were published in London (1682– 1704).

Goodwin was born at Rollesby and studied at Cambridge, becoming a fellow of Catharine Hall, 1620. He became vicar of Trinity Church, Cambridge, but on account of his Puritan views resigned his living and went to Holland, where he was a pastor to the English church at Arnhem. In 1640 he returned to London In 1643 he was elected a member of the Westminster Assembly, and frequently preached before the House of Commons.
