Gorakhpur

City in Uttar Pradesh, north India, situated on the Rapti River near the border with Nepal; population (2001) 624,600. It is at the centre of an agricultural region producing cotton, rice, and grain. Industries include railway maintenance and fertilizer manufacture. Pilgrims visit the Hindu Gorkhnath Temple.
