Gorbals

Part of City of Glasgow unitary authority, Scotland, lying south of the River Clyde. Until 1846 it was a separate municipality. Originally an impoverished and crowded area, the Gorbals underwent extensive redevelopment in the period 1958-73, with the first flats being opened in 1962. Many of the tower blocks were designed by the Scottish architect Basil Spence. Built between 1960 and 1966, they were demolished in 1993 in a state of poor repair. A new development programme was initiated in 1992.
