Howe, Gordie (Gordon) (1926– )

Canadian ice-hockey player, known as ‘Mr Hockey’, who played for the Detroit Red Wings (National Hockey League, NHL) 1946–71, the Houston Aeros (World Hockey Association, WHA) 1973–77, the New England Whalers (WHA) 1977, and the Hartford Whalers (NHL) 1978–80. He won the Hart Trophy for most valuable player six times during 1952–63. In the NHL, he scored more goals (801), assists (1,049), and points (1,850) than any other player in ice-hockey history until beaten by Wayne Gretsky. Howe played professional hockey until he was over 50.
