Gorgan

Market town in Mazandaran province, northern Iran; population (1991) 162,000. It is situated to the east of the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea, on the northern edge of the Elburz Mountains. Gorgan is a trading centre for cotton, wheat, and salt.

Formerly known as Astarabad, Gorgan was traditionally the last outpost for travellers and traders en route to Central Asia.
