Gorham

Town in Cumberland County, southeast Maine; population (1990) 11,900. It is situated on the Presumpscot River, 13 km/8 mi west of Portland. Gorham is home to the University of Southern Maine, and is a growing Portland suburb. Founded in 1728 as a grant to the 1675 Narragansett War veterans and heirs, the town developed industries including brickmaking and metal plating and anodizing. It was subsequently the site of a 19th-century Shaker community.
