Gorizia (town)

    0.04 sec.

Gorizia

Town in Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, northern Italy, on the River Isonzo, 30 km/19 mi southeast of Udine; population (1990) 39,000. Textiles, furniture, and paper are produced, and it is a market for wine, timber, and fruit. The town was a cultural centre under Habsburg rule, and has a partly 14th-century cathedral and a 16th-century castle.

Gorizia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until captured by the Italians during World War I. They initially took the town after a three-day battle in August 1916, but lost it again in October 1917, only to recover it in late 1918. The town was formally made part of Italy in the post-war settlement. It is on the border with Slovenia.
