Gorno-Altaisk

Capital, economic and cultural centre of Altai Republic in southern Siberia, in the Russian Federation; population (1994) 46,000. It is located 96 km/60 mi southeast of Biysk, on the Katun River. Industries include the manufacture of building materials, footwear, and foodstuffs. Gorno-Altaisk became a town in 1928.
