Gorr, Rita (1926- )

Belgian mezzo-soprano. She made her debut at Antwerp in 1949 as Fricka, and sang this role and Ortrud at Bayreuth 1958-59. She sang Charlotte on her debut at the Paris Opéra-Comique, and was also known as Massenet's Hérodiade. She was often heard in the Verdi repertory, and sang Amneris on her debuts at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London (1959) and the New York Metropolitan Opera House (1962). She was also a distinguished Eboli, Azucena, and Ulrica. She sang in POulenc's Les Carmélites and Richard Strauss's Salome at Lyon in 1990.
