Gort, John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 1st Viscount Gort (1886-1946)

British general who in World War II commanded the British Expeditionary Force 1939-40, conducting a fighting retreat from Dunkirk, France. Although he had no experience of major command, he handled the BEF with great skill in the face of the German onslaught and French collapse, taking the vital decision 23 May 1940 to withdraw the British Army via Dunkirk before it was entirely destroyed. 6th Viscount (Irish peerage) 1902, Viscount (UK) 1945.
