Goslar

City in Lower Saxony, Germany, on the northern side of the Harz Mountains, 76 km/47 mi southeast of Hannover; population (2005 est) 43,100; rural district 151,500. Goslar is a diversified industrial city and a tourist centre for the Harz Mountains. In the Middle Ages, it was an important town and imperial residence; the imperial palace remains.

Goslar contains numerous medieval houses and has a 13th-century Rathaus. In Rammelsberg, to the south, there were silver, gold, copper, zinc, and lead mines which were worked from the 10th century.
