Gotha

Town in Thuringia, Germany; population (2005 est) 47,900; rural district 143,700. Industries include the manufacture of ceramics, precision instruments, and textiles. It was the former capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and a medieval trading and cultural centre. The Schloss Friedenstein (1643-54), an early baroque palace fortress, dominates the town.

The castle museum has an important art collection, and there are extensive research library facilities and a folk museum. In the Pagenhaus (Pages' House) is the Cartographic Museum, illustrating Gotha's mapmaking traditions. The town also contains a Renaissance Rathaus (town hall), built from 1567 to 1577; and a number of beautiful baroque buildings.

The Almanach de Gotha was an annual survey of the European royalty, titled aristocracy, and diplomatic ranks published from 1763 to 1944.
