Gotland

Swedish island in the Baltic Sea; area 3,140 sq km/1,212 sq mi; population (1994 est) 58,200. The capital is Visby. Its products are mainly agricultural (sheep and cattle), and there is tourism. It was an area of dispute between Sweden and Denmark but became part of Sweden in 1645.

Visby is one of the oldest towns in Sweden and is situated on the large island Gotland in the middle of the Baltic Sea.
