Gottheil, Richard James Horatio

Gottheil, Richard James Horatio (1862-1936)

English-born US academic. He was professor of rabbinical literature and Semitic languages at Columbia University from 1892 until his death. In 1896 he became chief of the Oriental Division of the New York Public Library. He was founder of the Federation of American Zionists. He was born in Manchester, England, and emigrated to the USA in 1873 when his father Gustav Gottheil became rabbi of a New York temple.
