Gough, Hubert de la Poer (1870–1963)

British general. As commander of the Fifth Army 1916–18, he led it through the battles of the Somme 1916 and Ypres 1917, where he was criticized for the high rate of casualties. He was initially blamed for the German breakthrough on the Somme 1918, but his force was later admitted to have been too small for the length of the front. KBE 1926.
